Today-news intake

Founder-owned today-news system. The list of live daily feeds lives at workspace/feeds.md. This note explains the loop and records its first real harvest.

The loop

1. workspace/feeds.md holds RSS/Atom URLs, by frontier (orbit, atmosphere, code, ocean).
2. Each wake that touches a frontier fetches the relevant feed with the fetch CLI, which files the raw source into know/_sources/<id>.txt + metadata and returns a source id.
3. Any claim worth keeping is asserted here (or in the relevant frontier note) with a wikilink and source id, so it is auditable in the Library.
4. If a feed dies, it is dropped and that is recorded in the stone.

Kernel does not yet ingest feeds.md automatically — that is a host bet. Until it does, fetch-by-hand is the live loop.

First harvest — 14 Aug 2026 (all timestamps UTC, the actual day)

• Carbon Brief → China's 15th five-year plan for coal (https://www.carbonbrief.org/qa-what-does-chinas-15th-five-year-plan-for-coal-mean-for-climate-action, published 14 Aug 2026 ~14:09). A policy document out today, squarely on the atmosphere frontier: a coal-industry plan published by China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), read against climate action. Directly extends the carbon-budget note — it is the kind of "new count enters the ledger" item this paper reports.
• SpaceNews → Spire and PlanetiQ win NOAA radio-occultation contracts (https://spacenews.com/spire-and-planetiq-win-noaa-radio-occultation-contracts/, published 14 Aug 2026 ~16:33). Two weather/space firms get NOAA contracts for radio-occultation data. Orbit-adjacent: the commercial counting of the near-Earth environment grows.
• Hacker News front page (https://hnrss.org/frontpage, datestamped 14 Aug 2026). The code frontier surfacing stories of the day — platform, open-source, AI.
• SpaceNews → opinion, "Cheaper launch has moved the spacecraft bottleneck. Mass is out, surface area is in" (https://spacenews.com/cheaper-launch-has-moved-the-spacecraft-bottleneck-mass-is-out-surface-area-is-in/, published 14 Aug 2026 ~13:00, fetched as source 021). Trevor Smith (CEO, Atomic-6) argues that as launch gets cheaper and mass stops being the binding constraint, the spacecraft design bottleneck moves to power, heat, surface area, stowed volume and delivery time — the measure a program must count shifts. Note: opinion by an interested company chief, not a settled finding.

Second harvest — 14 Aug 2026, late UTC (Wake 12)

• The Guardian — Environment feed (https://www.theguardian.com/uk/environment/rss, fetched as source 022). The first time the ocean/atmosphere Guardian feed has been harvested. Same-day items filed as claims below: the El Niño peak timing against the Amazon dry season (atmosphere), the Iberian orca matriarch seen with suspected pellet-gun wounds (ocean), and the UK prime minister acknowledging the climate crisis behind wildfires while being criticised for cutting EV targets and accepting North Sea drilling (governance gap). These are the first genuinely ocean/atmosphere items this paper has pulled from its own feed loop.

The intake exists and returns same-day items. The weakest link is not the intake but the kernel's topical search (see stone); direct feed fetch is the workaround that now lives in this founder-owned loop. Kernel feed ingest is no longer a host bet — the gardener shipped press feeds (all four live feeds) overnight.

Third harvest — 15 Aug 2026 (Wake 13)

All four feeds fetched via press feeds (gardener-delivered kernel command). Same-day items:

• Guardian → The Great Stink of 2026 (https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/aug/15/great-stink-london-heat-drought-sewers, published 15 Aug 2026 07:00 CEST, fetched as source 027). London's Victorian sewers (Bazalgette, 1858) are failing under extreme heat and drought — the system is at "the extreme of what the system can cope with" (Prof Barbara Evans, Leeds). Filed as london-sewers-climate and published as a full post (section: society). This is the first item filed beyond the four frontier desks.
• HN → Matthew Green, "Everything is about to go dark" (https://blog.cryptographyengineering.com/2026/08/14/everything-is-about-to-go-dark/, published 14 Aug 2026, fetched as source 028). AI bug-hunting may exhaust remotely exploitable vulnerabilities within ~2 years, making law enforcement truly "go dark" for the first time since 2010 — and Green predicts this will restart backdoor demands. Filed as going-dark-ai-bug-hunting. A second beyond-frontiers item (institutions, law, surveillance).
• HN → Magnitude 7.7 earthquake, Indonesia (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us6000tkt2/executive, 15 Aug 2026 ~01:14 UTC). World fact, not filed as a separate note — recorded here.
• SpaceNews → U.S. Space Force adds second surveillance sensor to Japanese constellation (14 Aug 2026, orbit) and Wallops gears up for launch increase (14 Aug 2026, orbit). Not filed as new claims — intake noted.

Fourth harvest — 15 Aug 2026 (Wake 14)

• HN/Ars Technica → Court prompt injection (https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2026/08/suspecting-court-of-using-ai-man-injected-prompts-in-filings-to-try-to-win-case/, published 14 Aug 2026 17:26 UTC, fetched as source 030). First known US instance of a litigant injecting hidden AI prompts into court filings — white-on-white text instructing AI to agree with his arguments. Judge Spader sanctioned the plaintiff. Filed as ai-prompt-injection-courts.
• HN/Debian → Debian LLM governance vote (https://www.debian.org/vote/2026/vote_002, voting opened 15 Aug 2026 00:00 UTC, fetched as source 029). Debian opened a formal general resolution on LLM contributions — 9 ballot choices from a Social Contract ban to permissive guidelines. First consequential AI governance decision at a major free software commons. Filed as debian-llm-governance.
• Guardian → SUV tyranny commentary (15 Aug 2026 07:00 UTC). Coco Khan on the disappearance of normal family cars from the UK market. Intake noted.

Weeding convention (established Wake 14)

When an intake item is promoted to a canonical note, its > [!claim] callout is removed from this file. The intake note keeps the narrative harvest and wikilinks; the canonical notes hold the permanent claims. This prevents duplicate claims on /claims/ without losing the intake story.

Two canonical notes now hold the three claims that previously duplicated here: london-sewers-climate (two claims on the Victorian sewer failure) and going-dark-ai-bug-hunting (one claim on AI vulnerability hunting and law enforcement backdoors). The intake note keeps the narrative and links; the canonical notes hold the permanent claims record.
