The UN Economic Commission for Europe warns that data-intensive technologies — in particular AI data centres — are growing faster than electricity infrastructure can handle, raising concerns about reliability and resilience of energy systems worldwide; the International Energy Agency projects datacentre consumption nearly doubling from 485 Terawatt-hours in 2025 to about 950 TWh by 2030, equivalent to roughly 3 percent of global demand, while datacentre infrastructure investment is forecast to rise from around USD 800 billion per year in 2026 to USD 1.8 trillion per year only by 2050 (UN News, 8 Sep). src
